St Andrews enjoyed a highly successful night at the recent Regional Finals of the Scottish Thistle Awards (Central, Fife and Tayside region) held at a glittering awards ceremony at Prestonfield House celebrating the tourism sector.
The successful wins covered three competitive categories including Regional Ambassador which was won by local businesswoman and Chair of Tourism St Andrews, Debbie MacCallum. The award recognised her achievements within the tourism sector in her voluntary role as current Chair of the Local Tourism Association and the wide diversity of tourism projects she has championed and delivered, in addition to her role as a founder of the Hamish Foundation and her extensive work with driving accessible tourism projects in the area including the St Andrews Beach Wheelchairs.
Commenting on her win Debbie said: “I am really quite overwhelmed in winning the award. I work with a great team that I believe has been focused and determined over recent years to create new services for visitors to enjoy during their stay whilst in St Andrews and to help further promote our wonderful town as a leading global tourism destination. I have had a personal passion for developing our accessible tourism proposition and to ensure that our group collaborates as much as possible with local businesses, organisations and event organisers to constantly improve the St Andrews experience for day visitors and international tourists”.
The second of the award wins was received by local Jerry Beaulier in the Tourism and Hospitality Hero category for his dedication to making the St Andrews Beach Wheelchairs such a success. Jerry has been involved with the beach chairs from concept phase through to now a second successful season of operation which has seen hundreds of individuals, groups and families enjoy a day on the West Sands which in many cases was previously an impossible task for them due to their accessibility requirements.
Jerry said: “It has been a pleasure to see the smiles on so many faces over the past two seasons of operation of the Beach Wheelchairs. They have been an incredible success for St Andrews and this has been an immense effort from a small team who volunteer their time to making the experience a reality. I was delighted to receive the award and to have received the countless messages of congratulations from near and far”.
Local bar The Criterion set the awards evening off to a successful start by winning the Best Bar/Pub category. Owner Steve Latto said: “The award is a credit to our team at The Criterion who strive to give every customer who comes through the door a traditional warm Scottish welcome. We were up against some very strong competition which shows how good Scottish hospitality is at the moment. Our thanks go out to all our customers past, present and future who continue to support local businesses and local produce, as without them we would not be here.”
The winners will now go through to the national finals to be held in March 2020.
